Revised Bring History Alive! U.S. History
Bring History Alive! A Sourcebook for Teaching United States History
The National Center for History in the Schools, UCLA, announces a new, revised edition of Bring History Alive! A Sourcebook for Teaching United States History, which is now available for pre-order through our catalog, that will be available by the end of June. Over the fifteen years since we published this in 1996, thousands of teachers have drawn upon the over 1,200 classroom activities listed by era and topic within eras--all of this keyed to the National History Standards and easily matched to any state standards. The standards cover historical content knowledge; this is reinforced with the Bring History Alive! activities, many of which also address historical thinking and literacy skills such as those now outlined in the Common Core Standards.
In this revised edition, we have brought the classroom activities in Era 10 up to date to treat the years between 1996 and 2010, updated the introductions throughout, The resource section of the volume has been substantially expanded, updated, and revised to gather book and film suggestions for both teacher and students. It now includes references to all books suggested in the activities, as well as numerous other non-fiction, historical fiction, and film recommendations. These are handily listed era by era. General resources are listed as well, including collections of primary sources, teaching strategies, and reference volumes.
To accommodate the rapidly changing and growing nature of internet resources, a free online companion to the Bring History Alive! book will go live when the new edition is published. This reference section of the National Center for History in the Schools Web site, will be called “U.S. History for Us All,” and will provide general internet resources for history teachers and students as well as resources arranged by era so that teachers can easily get to important materials whenever they seek support for a part of U.S. history that they are teaching. This section will constantly be updated, and will grow to include links to online versions of resources listed in the activities provided throughout the volume.
We appreciate your help in bringing the revised edition of Bring History Alive! to the attention of others and hope you will urge school districts with whom you are working to purchase it for their teachers as a reference volume for their lessons. It will be a bargain at $25!
